A lot of people nowadays whether they are young or old are burdened with their blurred visions in eyes that may be brought by eyesight damage or because of illness like diabetes or glaucoma that gives you the worst eyesight. A blurred vision should not be ignored as it can be worse if left untreated and it may be a symptom of an illness that needs to be treated before it leads to blindness.
What Causes Blurred Vision and Blindness?
The blurred vision is the failure to see the fine details of our surroundings. Usually, the blurred vision is the cause of eye disease. The eye defect may worsen in time and may affect your quality of life and worst, your confidence level. Blurred vision may be the result of the following:
· Glaucoma. This is a disease in which our optic nerve is damaged. It leads to irreversible and progressive loss of vision. Most of the time, glaucoma is associated with the increased pressure of the fluid in the eye which damages some parts of our eye.
It causes damage to our nerves which involves loss of retinal ganglion cells in a characteristic pattern. The raised pressure in our eyes is a major risk factor in developing glaucoma. In this case, one person may develop nerve damage at relatively low pressure while another person may have high eye pressure for years and yet never develop damage.
If glaucoma remains untreated, it may lead to permanent damage to our optic nerve and results in visual field loss, which if it comes to worst, may lead to blindness. It may be treated through surgery or medication.
· Diabetes Mellitus. It is often called simply as diabetes. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases wherein a person has a high blood sugar does not produce enough insulin for the body, or because cells do not accept the insulin that is being produced.
Diabetes, which causes high blood sugar, causes symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, and increased hunger. It eventually affects the eyes which in the worst case lead to blindness along with many other organs in our body, if it is left unmonitored.
· Cataract. This eye problem is a clouding that blocks the passage of light into the crystalline lens of the eye which causes blurred vision and in the worst case, it may lead to blindness.
In the early development of cataracts, the power of the lens of our eyes may be increased. This will cause near-sightedness or myopia. It also causes steady yellowing and becoming opaque of the lens that may reduce the perception of blue colors. Cataracts usually grow slowly until it causes vision loss and it can be potentially blinding if untreated. It usually affects both the eyes, but most of the time, one eye is affected earlier than the other.
It is very hard to cope with our previous lifestyle if ever we go blind so we must take care of our body especially our eyes. There are certain diseases that can cause blurred vision and blindness. Thus, it is of vital importance that we take care of our sense of sight as well as of our body to prevent various illnesses that may cause blindness.
